Two Chinese government ships left Japan's territorial waters near the Senkaku Islands on Sunday after staying there for more than 25 hours. The Japan Coast Guard says the Chinese vessels entered the territorial waters south of the island of Minamikojima shortly after 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. It says they appeared to be following a Japanese fishing boat. The two ships left the waters off Minamikojima and Uotsuri Island shortly after 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. The coast guard is warning them not to reenter Japan's territorial waters. This is the 24th time this year and the first since September 15 that Chinese government ships have been spotted in Japan's territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands in Okinawa Prefecture. Japan controls the islands. China and Taiwan claim them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory, in terms of history and international law. It says there is no issue of sovereignty to be resolved over them.
