Japanese TV personality and fashion icon Ryuchell was found dead at an office in Tokyo on Wednesday. Police believe the cause of death is suicide.

Born in Okinawa, Ryuchell, whose real name was Higa Ryuji, began working at clothing stores in Tokyo while modeling. Ryuchell gained recognition on TV and social media for their colorful fashion and cheerful personality.

Ryuchell married fellow model Peco in 2016, and had a son in 2018. Last year, the couple legally ended their marriage.

Ryuchell has often spoke about gender, based on their experiences as a child.

In an NHK online article in December 2019, Ryuchell said there was a gap between the general perception of manhood and what they wanted to be like.

Ryuchell said being forced to behave as a stereotype of a boy made them confused and sad.

Ryuchell said that when they were praised as manly for expressing determination to work harder to protect their child, they realized that perceptions about manhood differ from person to person.

The social media influencer also said they realized the importance of living as they like without being confined by established notions of gender.

Ryuchell said that whatever choices their son would make about his future, they wanted to believe in his decision even if the decision was incomprehensible.

Ryuchell also said adults should not restrict children's talent or future by forcing their notions on them.

Okinawa Governor Tamaki Denny said that in modern society, bitter expressions can be rampant on social media but should not force someone to change one's way of life or take one's own life.

He said everyone should carefully explain themselves and make sure their words do not pierce other people's hearts like spears.
