G7, Global South security officials to meet in Saudi Arabia to discuss Ukraine NHK

Diplomatic sources say senior government officials from the Group of Seven countries and major developing nations will meet in Saudi Arabia next weekend to discuss the situation in Ukraine.

The sources say the two-day gathering will be held in Saudi Arabia's western city of Jeddah on Saturday. Its organizers include Ukraine.

The meeting will be the second of its kind following similar talks in Denmark in June.
Its participants will be high-ranking security officials from the G7 countries as well as emerging and developing nations collectively called the Global South, such as India, Brazil and Turkey. Arrangements are underway for the head of Ukraine's presidential office, Andriy Yermak, to attend the meeting.

They will discuss the latest situation concerning Ukraine and Russia.

The delegates will also seek to lay the groundwork for a Ukraine security conference that will bring world leaders together in the United States on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September.

The G7 leaders confirmed their long-term security commitment to Ukraine at their summit in Lithuania in July. But some Global South countries are showing consideration for their relations with Russia.

Analysts say the G7 will try to maintain its negotiating framework with Global South nations to strengthen appeals for sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine.
