India has successfully landed an unmanned probe on the surface of the moon. It is the world's first-ever landing near the moon's south pole. The Indian Space Research Organization says the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft touched down just after 6 p.m. on Wednesday, India time. Scientists say it's possible water exists at the pole in the form of ice. The probe's mission is to check for this and other resources in the area. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "This success belongs to all of humanity." He added, "I am confident that all countries in the world including those from the Global South are capable of achieving such feats." India's previous attempt in 2019 failed when a software glitch caused the craft to crash into the lunar surface. India is now the fourth country to land on the moon, after the former Soviet Union, the United States and China.
