Death toll of Gaza children continues to rise, as Qatar ceasefire talks underway NHK

The United Nations Children's Fund, or UNICEF, said on Wednesday that at least 74 children were killed in Gaza in the first seven days of this year.

The organization said, "Too many children have been killed or lost loved ones in a tragic start to the new year." It made a fresh call for a truce.

The indirect talks between Israel and the Islamic group Hamas resumed earlier this month in Qatar, the mediating country.

The Middle East envoy of US President-elect Donald Trump said that he hopes to have good things to report by the time Trump is sworn in as president on January 20.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken noted during a visit to France on Wednesday that negotiators are very close to a ceasefire and hostage agreement.

A group of the families of hostages said in a statement, "The time and conditions are ripe for the return of all hostages." The families are urging the Israeli government to do all it can to bring all hostages home as soon as possible.
