A New York judge has ordered former US President Donald Trump to pay nearly 355 million dollars in a civil fraud verdict against the Trump Organization.

The focus of Friday's ruling was on how much Trump and other defendants would be ordered to pay after it was found last September they had lied about the organization's net worth.

The judge ordered Trump and other defendants to pay 354.9 million dollars. Trump was also barred from serving as an officer or director of any corporation in New York State for three years.

The lawsuit filed by the New York attorney general accused the business entity that Trump ran before taking office of overstating his net worth.

Attorney General Letitia James argued the organization made fraudulent financial statements for about 10 years to get favorable loan terms from lenders. She had demanded that Trump and other defendants return some 370 million dollars. Trump's side has consistently denied the allegations.

Trump swiftly responded to Friday's ruling. Speaking to reporters, he blamed US President Joe Biden for what he called a witch hunt against a political foe. He expressed his intention to appeal.

Trump is faced with more trials regarding four criminal cases in which he has been indicted while campaigning for the presidential election in November. He is the lead contender in the Republican Party nomination race.
