US President Donald Trump has commented on deadly anti-government protests in Iran, saying, "The killing looks like it's significant."
Telling reporters on Tuesday that Iran is on his mind, Trump said, "We'll get some accurate numbers as to what's happening with regard to the killing." He added, "We'll act accordingly."
The Iranian government has not made public how many people have died or been injured.
The New York Times quoted an anonymous senior Iranian health ministry official as saying about 3,000 people, including security officers, have been killed. A US-based human rights group put the number at over 2,500.
Citing a source familiar with the matter, US news website Axios reported on Tuesday, "Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in closed-door meetings in recent days that, at this stage, the administration is looking at non-kinetic responses to help the protesters."
Trump called on the people of Iran to keep protesting and take over their institutions.
