The Japanese government is considering relaxing border controls on travelers from China, which it has temporarily imposed since December of last year in response to the surge in coronavirus infections there. The current measures require all people arriving from mainland China and Macao to show proof of a negative coronavirus test. PCR or other tests are also conducted upon arrival. Government officials are discussing the easing of these rules, as the percentage of people who test positive upon arrival is declining. They also cite that the infection situation in China appears to be improving. Specifically, the officials are proposing dropping the requirement to show proof of negative test results, and limiting the number of tests on arrivals. But the government remains cautious about the easing, as some point out that Beijing's official infection data appears to lack transparency.
