Top officials in China's Communist Party plan to get the country's faltering economy back on track next year by boosting domestic demand.

The state-run Xinhua news agency says the Political Bureau of the party's Central Committee convened on Friday. The meeting was chaired by President Xi Jinping.

The report quotes the Politburo as saying China has withstood external pressures and overcome internal challenges.

Officials reportedly called for efforts to promote consumption and investment, and boost domestic demand.

They also reportedly noted that the measures China has taken recently have helped the country's economy during the coronavirus pandemic.

Officials also stressed the need to strengthen supply chains through innovation. Observers say those calls reflect China's determination to counter the United States in the high-tech industry.
