The US White House says it is evaluating a reply from Hamas to a US-backed proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. But it remains to be seen whether the proposal leads to progress in negotiations, as Israel appears to be unconvinced by the response.

US President Joe Biden on May 31 revealed a three-phase plan that includes a six-week ceasefire and release of hostages held by Hamas.

Egypt and Qatar, both serving as mediators in negotiations, said on social media on Tuesday that they have received a response to the plan from Hamas.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said, "It's certainly helpful that we have a response."

Details of the response have yet to be disclosed. Earlier, Hamas showed some positive signs toward the proposal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has not changed his goal, which involves the complete destruction of Hamas.

An Israeli official told Reuters news agency that Hamas has rejected the hostage release proposal in the plan.
