A consortium of Japanese firms is testing a new anti-collision system for electric-assist bikes to cut the number of accidents at intersections. Five firms, including Panasonic Cycle Technology and Toyota Motor, are testing the system in Yokohama, near Tokyo. Devices installed in bikes and cars use satellites to identify each other's position, direction and speed. When they approach an intersection with poor visibility, their smartphones issue a warning on the phone screen and through the speaker. The companies say they aim to have the system on the market as early as 2025.
