Thailand holds countdown event for same-sex marriage NHK

In Thailand, a law allowing same-sex marriage will be introduced next month. At least 280 couples plan to tie the knot the day it takes effect.

Groups promoting LGBTQ rights and officials from related government departments held an event in Bangkok on Monday.

The law comes into operation on January 22. It guarantees LGBTQ couples the same rights as heterosexual unions, including tax benefits, inheritance and adoption rights.

An organization supporting the LGBTQ community will cooperate with the government of Bangkok to host a group wedding ceremony on the day. About 200 couples will take part.

Ann Chumaporn, president and founder of Naruemit Pride, said they hope officials in every area come to know how to treat and support LGBT couples.

A fashion show was also staged, with same-sex pairs performing in wedding dresses and tuxedos.

A participant in the fashion show said: "I feel relieved. My partner is a single mother, and we have rights just like any other family now -- like passing on inheritance."

The interior ministry is preparing for the law's rollout by providing training for public servants so registrations can be done smoothly.
