A senior Russian official says Russian troops have taken control of an area of nearly 1,000 square kilometers in eastern Ukraine since August.
                
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu made the remark during an interview with a state-run broadcaster, which was aired on Tuesday.
                
The former defense minister also said Russian troops have been increasing the pace of their offensive.
                
On the other hand, Ukraine says its forces had seized about 1,300 square kilometers of Russia&#039;s Kursk region as of late August. The forces have been carrying out cross-border attacks there.
                
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Ukraine on Wednesday, along with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
                
They are expected to discuss Kyiv&#039;s request for the lifting of restrictions on the use of long-range weapons provided by the United States and European countries.
