Many people in rebel-held areas of Syria desperately need more support following Monday's devastating earthquakes. United Nations aid officials say food is running out. World Food Programme Regional Director for the Middle East Corinne Fleischer said, "Northwest Syria, where 90% of the population depends on humanitarian assistance, is a big concern. We have reached the people there, but we need to replenish our stocks." Fleischer says its essential to create more border crossings from Turkey. There is currently just one. It was shut after Monday's quakes but reopened on Thursday. Syria has been ravaged by 12 years of civil war. The International Committee of the Red Cross urges both sides to cooperate with the delivery of vital supplies. ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric said, "What is most important now is that we gain access to all parts of northern Syria to help people who need our urgent support. Impartial humanitarian assistance should never be hindered, nor politicized. We have to get access." On Friday, state media said the government of President Bashar al-Assad has approved the movement of aid across the civil war's frontlines. The death toll from the quakes in Syria stands at more than 3,300.
