Series of summits to open in Southeast Asia, with Biden to meet Xi in person NHK

Government leaders from the Asia-Pacific and other regions are poised to kick off a series of meetings in Southeast Asia to discuss Ukraine, food, energy and other issues.

The White House says President Joe Biden will hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Indonesia on Monday. It will be their first face-to-face meeting since Biden took office. Washington and Beijing are at odds over Taiwan and other matters.

Leaders from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and other countries will start summits in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Friday. Their agenda will likely include Myanmar, which has been embroiled in turmoil since a military coup in February 2021.

A Group of 20 summit will open on the Indonesian island of Bali on Tuesday, and a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation will begin in Bangkok, Thailand, next Friday.

Participants will include Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio. Xi is also expected to attend. He will be making his first trip outside China since starting an unprecedented third term as leader of the Chinese Communist Party last month.

Russia will send a delegation led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to the G20 meeting.
