Campaigns are seeking funds to support traditional industries in the Noto region of Ishikawa Prefecture, which was devastated by a massive earthquake on New Year's Day.

A group of volunteers solicited donations on the streets of Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward on Sunday, to help Wajima-nuri lacquerware craftsmen.

The group says it heard from a lacquerware shop in Wajima City that many studios and offices there collapsed.

It aims to raise 11.3 million yen, or about 76,000 dollars, by the end of February. The money will be used to rebuild studios and purchase tools.

Group member Saito Kosaku says efforts to preserve Ishikawa's industries and cultures are important, and he hopes that the group's campaign will be part of this.

Also on Sunday, a charity screening of a documentary film was held in Tokyo's Shinagawa Ward.

"The Genealogy of Sake" highlights master brewers in the cities of Wajima and Suzu over the course of two and a half years.

Director Ishii Kaori asked attendees to remember people who lived in Noto and how they led their lives, and to keep the region in their thoughts during the reconstruction process that may take years.

The Ishikawa Sake Brewers Association says the quake left all 11 makers in the Oku-Noto region, which includes Wajima and Suzu, unable to operate.

Ishii says about 80 individuals and groups across the country have contacted her about screening her film. Proceeds will be donated to support the quake-hit areas.
