Israel resumed its offensive in the Gaza Strip on Friday morning after a truce with Hamas came to an end. Video shot by NHK staff member Salam Abu Tahoun shows what appears to be the aftermath of an attack in Rafah, southern Gaza. People were seen clearing debris and carrying the wounded to safety. Health authorities in Gaza say the assault killed 109 people and injured hundreds. The Israeli Prime Minister's office says Hamas violated the terms of the truce by failing to release all women hostages. Israel's military says it intercepted a rocket launched from Gaza one hour before the pause ended. There were mixed reactions among people in Israel over the resumption of fighting. One woman says, "We have to fight now because we are eight million people in Israel and eight million people deserve to live." Over the course of the seven-day truce, Hamas freed 105 hostages, and Israel released 240 jailed Palestinians. Qatar, Egypt and the United States have been mediating between the two sides. The Qatari government says it will continue to work towards humanitarian pauses and de-escalation. One Japanese expert on the Middle East says Israel could struggle to sustain a prolonged military operation. Suzuki Hiroyuki, Project Associate Professor at University of Tokyo, cites the economic burden and the hundreds of thousands of reservists already drafted. He says, "The current scale of military action can be maintained for only a short term. We expect it to last for a couple of months... probably three months. That means Israel will likely at least change its operations in late December or early January. We are watching to see whether it will be a shift to a new military campaign or a truce." In a statement on Friday, Hamas reiterated its resolve to fight Israel.
