Bus plunges off road in Guatemala City, killing more than 50 NHK

Authorities in Guatemala are investigating Monday's bus accident that killed more than 50 people. Reuters news agency and other media outlets report the vehicle plunged about 20 meters after veering off a road.

The media outlets say the crash happened in the capital of the central American country, Guatemala City.

Footage shows police and rescuers conducting a search as the bus is overturned and mostly submerged in a river below a cliff.

About 70 people were reportedly traveling in the bus.

Reports say the bus had hit a number of other cars right before careening off the road.

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo declared three days of national mourning, saying in his social media post that he stands in solidarity with the families of the victims. He added that their pain is his pain.
