Thailand counts down to same-sex marriage legalization NHK

Thailand's same-sex marriage law will come into effect next week. Government officials at a public event promised that LGBTQ couples will be able to smoothly register their marriages.

The Thai government and the United Nations co-hosted the celebration on Monday. In attendance were the country's provincial governors, embassy officials and LGBTQ advocates.

Thai Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said, "We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring seamless and lawful marriage registration for all couples, fostering trust in a system that values diversity and upholds individuals' dignity."

The new law guarantees same-sex couples the same rights as those in heterosexual unions, including tax benefits, inheritance and adoption rights.

A participant said, "It's just such a great thing to see that our love will be recognized finally and we can take responsibility of each other's life."

The law goes into effect from January 23. A marriage registration event will take place that day in Bangkok, with about 300 couples tying the knot.
