More than 490,000 applicants for universities in Japan have begun the two-day standardized entrance examinations. The first day of the annual exams started on Saturday at 651 venues across the country. The revised test for university admissions was launched in 2021. This year's edition is employing a different format for the first time that is based on the new education curriculum guidelines, with 21 subjects in seven subject areas. Previously, it covered 30 subjects in six areas. At the University of Tokyo campus in Tokyo, students waited in line while looking at their reference books, before the gate opened at 8 a.m. One student said she is very nervous, but added that she will do her best as she has long hoped to study management at university. Another student said that since the test is employing the new format, there are many things that he must pay attention to. He noted that all the test takers are facing the same situation, and said that he will stay calm and do his best so that he can repay his family and teachers for their support. Exams for the subject areas of geography and history, as well as civics, were conducted on Saturday morning. Organizers said that as of 11 a.m., there had been no reports of trouble that could affect the test. Exams for Japanese language and foreign languages, as well as English listening comprehension, are scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
