Japan's health minister, Kato Katsunobu, says the government will review measures other than mask-wearing that were put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
The government has decided to downgrade the legal status of coronavirus to the same category as seasonal influenza in May.
Prior to the downgrade, individuals will be able to make their own decisions regarding mask-wearing starting March 13.
Kato told reporters on Tuesday that it is important to continue anti-infection measures, such as avoiding crowded places, social distancing, hand-washing and ventilation.
But he added that his ministry's infectious disease panel has called for an immediate review of stringent measures, and is in favor of informing the public of effective measures.
Kato said he will consult with experts in reviewing basic prevention methods as well, such as the installation of transparent barriers.
