China's government sees the founder of a startup in the country that has developed a low-cost artificial intelligence tool as a key figure in the AI field. Liang Wenfeng founded DeepSeek, which has recently garnered attention at home and abroad for its development of a cheaper AI model. The rollout caused the tech-heavy Nasdaq index in New York to plunge on Monday. State-run China Central Television reported last Monday that Liang attended a gathering of business leaders hosted by Chinese Premier Li Qiang. Chinese online media outlet Pengpai says Liang was born in the 1980s. He completed a graduate school program at Zhejiang University, which is known for its AI research. He founded DeepSeek in 2023. The startup's development team has 139 people, including Liang. The size is significantly small compared with that of OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT, and other tech giants. Liang was asked by journalists to comment on DeepSeek's generative AI model, which has triggered a price war among major Chinese IT firms. He reportedly replied that he has no intention of disrupting the industry, and expressed hope that lower prices will allow more people to access his AI model.
