US tech giant Meta says it will release a state-of-the-art artificial intelligence model for academia and industry labs amid accelerating competition in interactive AI technology. Meta, formerly known as Facebook, made the announcement on its official blog on Friday. It says the new interactive AI model named LLaMA is designed to engage in dialogue with users, generate text and summarize documents among other functions. In a Facebook post, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said LLaMA has shown a lot of promise for more complicated tasks like solving mathematical theorems or predicting protein structures. Meta says the model is focused on the use for research purposes for the moment and access to it will be granted to academic researchers, those affiliated with organizations in government and civil society as well as industry research laboratories. In November last year, the firm released another interactive AI model focused on natural science. But it was forced to retract the model only three days after its release because it generated responses that included false information. Meta's rivals include Microsoft, Google and US venture firm OpenAI, whose ChatGPT is becoming widely used around the world.
