Taiwan holds annual air-raid evacuation drills NHK

This year's air-raid evacuation drills began in Taiwan on Monday. The annual exercises are aimed at preparing people for possibilities such as a missile attack by China.

The drills are being held separately in four regions across Taiwan through Thursday.

On the first day of the exercises, air-raid sirens sounded in seven cities and counties in northern Taiwan.

A large number of police officers deployed in a busy district near Taipei Station guided pedestrians into buildings and underground facilities.

The sirens indicate that it is necessary for citizens to stay indoors for 30 minutes. There are legal penalties for failing to comply with police directives.

The normally bustling streets of Taipei were strangely hushed after people had taken cover. Buses were pulled over and shops empty of customers.

One woman in an underground corridor with her two children said sometimes she feels scared by the risks associated with tension between Taiwan and China.

She said the drills are necessary for that very reason.

Taiwan is also holding large annual military exercises in tandem with the evacuation drills.
