Taiwan's health ministry says people in Taiwan have donated about 17 million dollars to help relief and reconstruction efforts after the massive earthquake that hit central Japan on New Year's Day. The ministry says 134,000 donations had been made by Friday last week through special accounts opened on January 5. The money will be sent via Taiwan's Foreign Ministry. Separately, Taiwanese authorities have announced they will donate 60 million yen, or about 400,000 dollars, in disaster relief. After the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, about 135 million dollars were donated from Taiwan.
