Memorial concert held in China for conductor Ozawa Seiji NHK

A concert in memory of celebrated conductor Ozawa Seiji has been held in China, where the maestro spent the early part of his life.

The concert was held on Tuesday in Beijing and conducted by Chinese conductor Yu Lu, who had learned from Ozawa from age 19.

After performances of Chinese and French pieces, Ozawa's daughter, Ozawa Seira, gave Yu her father's score for Beethoven's Symphony No.5. Yu conducted the piece using his mentor's score.

Ozawa was born in 1935 in what was then Manchuria, now northeastern China. His family moved to Beijing before returning to Japan when he was five.

He had a strong attachment to China, visiting the country many times and teaching music there. He died in February at age 88.

Ozawa is known in China for his contributions to classical music in the country.

A woman who attended the concert says his passing was a great loss for the world of music. She says Yu's performance helped her understand that Ozawa's art and spirit live on.
