Nippon TV president asks Johnny & Associates to consider name change NHK

The head of Tokyo-based commercial broadcaster, Nippon Television Network Corporation, has called on major Japanese talent agency Johnny & Associates to consider changing its name because of the sexual abuse committed by its late founder.

The agency earlier this month apologized and admitted that Johnny Kitagawa had sexually abused minors over many years. At that time, senior agency officials said that they had no plan to change the company name soon.

On Monday, Nippon TV President Ishizawa Akira told reporters that he does not acknowledge the talent agency has fully responded to the issue. He disclosed that the broadcaster made a number of requests in writing to the agency last Wednesday.

Ishizawa said the requests include that the agency provide appropriate compensation to the victims and take measures to prevent recurrences.

The broadcaster also asked the agency to review its corporate structure to enable its male entertainers to feel comfortable when pursuing their careers.

Ishizawa said he also verbally called on the agency to change its name, and to separate its managerial sector from the section that will be set up to compensate victims.

Asked whether the broadcaster will continue to use the agency's entertainers for its programs, Ishizawa replied the decision will depend on whether Johnny & Associates can come out with a policy that will regain trust. He expressed readiness to keep an eye on the new policy to be unveiled on October 2.

In August, a report by the agency's outside investigative team pointed at the media's silence, which it said played a role in the problem.

Ishizawa said his company will conduct an internal hearing regarding its past coverage, and will publicly release the results of its findings.
