A panel of experts from Japan and other countries says it will compile proposals to maintain the framework of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
                
The second meeting of the International Group of Eminent Persons for a World without Nuclear Weapons was held in Tokyo on Tuesday and Wednesday.
                
Fourteen experts from Japan, the United States, Russia, China and elsewhere took part, some of them online.
                
The forum, launched by Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, gives opportunities to people from nuclear powers and non-nuclear states to exchange opinions.
                
After the meeting, Prefectural University of Kumamoto Chancellor Shiraishi Takashi, who served as chair, spoke to reporters.
                
He said the participants discussed issues including Russia&#039;s nuclear threat and North Korea&#039;s nuclear development.
                
Shiraishi also said they agreed to put together proposals ahead of a preparatory committee meeting for a treaty review conference to be held this summer.
                
He noted that the experts had in-depth discussions to maintain and strengthen the NPT regime. He also said they all share concerns about the worsening global situation and hope to propose concrete measures as much as possible.
                
Japan&#039;s government wants to issue a strong message for a world free of nuclear weapons at the Group of Seven summit in Hiroshima next month, using the forum&#039;s discussions as a reference.
