The Japanese seafood industry is keen to expand abroad. And officials see potential for more scallop exports to Indonesia. Japanese Embassy officials held an event on Wednesday in Jakarta. They invited more than 1,000 guests, some from other countries. Many took the chance to sample scallops from Hokkaido. China has suspended imports of Japanese seafood in light of a decision to release treated and diluted water from the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean. The scallop industry is feeling the pain, and officials have been keen to expand seafood exports elsewhere. Japanese Embassy official Wakabayashi Hajime says, "The Indonesian market doesn't have a problem with our marine products. I think people here are taking a calm approach based on science." Japanese officials also see potential for expansion in South Korea and Thailand.
