Japan's prime minister hopes for win-win tariff talks with US NHK

Japan's Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru has instructed the minister in charge of tariff talks with the United States to negotiate an outcome that is beneficial to both countries.

Ishiba met with Economic Revitalization Minister Akazawa Ryosei in Tokyo on Tuesday, one day before his trip to Washington for the tariff talks.

The prime minister told Akazawa to do his utmost to build trust with the US officials to achieve a win-win outcome for both nations.

Akazawa will visit Washington for three days from Wednesday for his first talks with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

Akazawa said in a news conference that he aims to lodge a strong request to review the tariff measures in the talks with Bessent.

He said profits of Japanese companies are dropping every day, and that the government will work hard to achieve good results as soon as possible.

Akazawa also said the US has imposed the tariff measures based on its national interest, so negotiations will not be easy. He added that he will examine all possible options to find the most beneficial steps for both sides.
