Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force and the Indian Army completed a two-week joint drill at a training facility in a desert in India's western state of Rajasthan on Saturday. Forty members from each country took part in the exercise, the fifth of its kind. Members of the Indian Army, who are said to be highly capable and experienced in anti-terror operations, worked with the GSDF personnel in an operation to subdue a group of terrorists in hiding and to practice breaking into a building. India and China have been locked in a long-standing border dispute. In 2020, forces from the two countries clashed with casualties on both sides. More recently, China's influence over India's neighbors including the Maldives and Bangladesh has been increasing. The latest drill is believed to be an attempt to show the strengthening defense cooperation between India and Japan. A GSDF commander who was overseeing the exercise said closer bilateral ties between the two countries will help maintain and strengthen a free and open Indo-Pacific.
