A ceremony has been held in western Japan to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the full opening of the Sanyo Shinkansen bullet train line. The train line connecting Shin-Osaka with Hakata went into full service on March 10, 1975, with the opening of a section between Okayama and Hakata stations. Japan Railway officials, Hiroshima Governor Yuzaki Hidehiko and former pro baseball player Kuroda Hiroki took part in the event at Hiroshima station on Monday. Yuzaki said the full opening of the Sanyo Shinkansen line has had a great impact on Hiroshima in a range of areas, including tourism and other business sectors. He said a new building is set to open at the end of this month that will further boost the presence of Hiroshima station. Kuroda said he started for the Hiroshima Carp in the season openers held at opposing teams' stadiums for five years. He said he vividly remembers heading for his destinations by Shinkansen while feeling nervous and excited. Kuroda has also played in the Major Leagues. A crowd of onlookers saw off a Hikari train bound for Hakata. West Japan Railway Company, or JR West, says that with the full opening of the Shinkansen line, the travel time between Tokyo and Hiroshima stations was cut from six and a half hours to about five hours. The company says the trip now takes a minimum of 3 hours and 43 minutes. A JR West official said the firm will continue to provide safe services, with a sense of appreciation to everyone.
