A volcano in the Indonesian province of North Sulawesi continues to show signs of activity, after a major eruption early Tuesday morning. Authorities have raised the alert level to its highest, and are keeping a close watch. The early morning eruption of Mount Ruang sent a plume of smoke as high as 19,000 meters into the air. The authorities are urging people not to go within seven kilometers of the crater and are calling on residents on a nearby island to watch out for possible tsunami. The regional disaster management agency says the volcano is located on an island with about 830 residents, who have been told to evacuate. Mount Ruang erupted two weeks ago, forcing the islanders to flee to a neighboring island and causing damage to homes. An evacuee, Ivon Bawotong, who fled after the first eruption, says the volcanic activity have left him feeling sad and afraid, adding that the government needs to pay more attention to the problem of providing food and other assistance for evacuees.
