Tank training for Ukrainian soldiers underway in Germany NHK

Training of Ukrainian soldiers on Leopard 1 tanks and other German-made weaponry is underway.

The aim of the training in Germany is to allow Ukrainian troops to master how to use weapons provided by Berlin as military support. German forces have trained 6,000 Ukrainians since November of last year.

On Thursday, the media was invited to watch Leopard 1 tanks at a training ground in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt.

Ukrainian soldiers on three tanks practiced firing and other drills.

The Leopard 2 is considered one of the best tanks in the world. The Leopard 1 is an older model, but the German military says it has an edge over Russian tanks for its night combat capability and mobility.

The German government plans to send 100 Leopard 1s to Ukraine.

Lieutenant General Andreas Marlow said the advantage of the Leopard 1 is that it can be supplied in triple-digit numbers through next year.

A Ukrainian soldier said the training is effective and helpful to get ready for fighting. The soldier expressed his willingness to fight on the frontline on the Leopard 1.
