US and South Korean forces are set to begin major joint air drills on Monday amid North Korea's unprecedentedly frequent missile launches.
The five-day exercises will reportedly involve about 240 aircraft. They will include state-of-the-art stealth fighter jets -- F-35As from the South Korean air force and F-35Bs from the US Marine Corps' air station in the western Japanese city of Iwakuni.
The drills will be the largest of their kind by the two countries since 2017, when North Korea held a nuclear test and repeatedly launched missiles, such as ballistic ones with an intercontinental range.
The South Korean military says the exercises will enhance operational capabilities and help deter North Korea from carrying out provocations.
The US and South Korea staged joint maritime drills in October with a nuclear-powered US aircraft carrier which had been redeployed to the Sea of Japan.
The South Korean military also held regular field maneuver exercises through Friday, with US troops participating in part of the drills.
Pyongyang claimed on its official website on Saturday that the US and South Korea would conduct the air drills with the aim of invading North Korea.
