Japan's new ambassador to China has arrived in Beijing, where he said he will try to create an environment for the two countries to advance dialogue, and call on China to work to solve pending issues. Ambassador Kanasugi Kenji, speaking at news conference at the Japanese embassy in the capital on Tuesday, voiced his commitment to call on Beijing to quickly release detained Japanese nationals. Among those held is an employee of a major Japanese pharmaceutical company, detained in Beijing in March. Kanasugi stressed the importance of ensuring safety and security for Japanese citizens and safeguarding the interest of Japanese companies. Kanasugi also mentioned China's continuing restriction of importing Japanese fishery products over the release of treated and diluted water into the ocean from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. He said persistent talks are necessary to move toward a consensus based on scientific knowledge. Kanasugi entered the foreign ministry in 1983. He served as the Asian and Oceanian affairs bureau's director-general, and most recently, as ambassador to Indonesia. Though he is not a member of the foreign ministry's China school, he has engaged in diplomacy with China during his career. He said at the news conference he has worked in Japan-China relations for nearly four years, including as deputy minister for foreign affairs in charge of economic matters.
