European Council President asks China's Xi to help end Russia's invasion NHK

European Council President Charles Michel met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday to discuss the Ukrainian situation and other issues.

A spokesperson for Michel says the president called on China, which is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, to play a role in ending Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The spokesperson says the two leaders discussed Russia's suggestion of potentially using nuclear arms against Ukraine, and they agreed that threat by nuclear weapons is irresponsible and highly dangerous.

The spokesperson stopped short of clarifying how Michel referred to the recent massive protests across China against the severe restrictions under the country's zero-COVID policy.

Michel is scheduled to hold a news conference soon on his exchanges with the Chinese president.
