Indonesia reports surge in fatal kindey problems among children NHK

Health ministry officials in Indonesia have temporarily banned prescriptions and sales of all medicinal syrups amid a spate of fatal kidney problems among children.

They say 241 people have suffered a sudden loss of kidney function this year. About 70 percent were aged five or younger. Of the total, 133 died.

The country's Food and Drug Authority says ethylene glycol has been detected in five domestically produced syrups. The toxic substance is typically used as an antifreeze agent in engines.

Authorities are looking into whether other syrups also contain dangerous substances.
