Controllers interviewed in Haneda Airport collision, data recovered NHK

Officials from the Japan Transport Safety Board have been interviewing air traffic controllers at Tokyo's Haneda Airport.

They hope to pinpoint the exact cause of Tuesday's deadly runway collision between a Japan Airlines passenger jet and a Japan Coast Guard plane.

They also say they have recovered the voice recorder of the JAL plane, and will start analyzing the data.

The JAL jet collided with the coast guard plane immediately upon landing. Five of the six coast guard crew were killed. All on board the JAL flight evacuated.

The coast guard plane is believed to have entered the runway by mistake. The control tower was unaware of its location when the crash occurred.

The investigators have interviewed controllers in charge of the runway. They also spoke with the team leader and assistant controllers in an effort to clarify the situation in the tower at the time.

The accident forced the cancellation of more than 200 domestic flights to and from Haneda Airport each day on Saturday and Sunday.

Transport ministry officials say the runway where the incident took place will reopen on Monday.
