A court in Belarus has sentenced Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialiatski to 10 years in prison. The Belarusian human rights activist has been detained since 2021, when authorities intensified their crackdown on protesters following the 2020 presidential election. Bialiatski was indicted last November. The charges included involving a citizen in activities to disturb public order. State media reported about his sentencing on Friday. The human rights organization Spring, which Bialiatski founded, also confirmed the ruling. The 2022 Nobel Peace Prize was jointly awarded to Bialiatski and human rights organizations from Russia and Ukraine. But he could not attend the award ceremony last December because he was already in prison on other charges. Bialiatski has worked to expose human rights violations by the government of President Alexander Lukashenko. The latest sentence is likely to prompt more criticism from the international community.
