Iran says it has executed a man who participated in anti-government demonstrations in 2022. The move has caused widespread revulsion and prompted an imprisoned Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner to announce that there will be a hunger strike at her prison. There were nationwide protests in the country after Mahsa Amini died in police custody in September of 2022. The 22-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly wearing her hijab headscarf improperly. The Iranian authorities suppressed the demonstrations by making arrests and taking other steps. Fierce clashes between people and the police occurred across the country during the protests. Iran's judiciary on Tuesday announced that it had executed a 23-year-old man. The individual had been charged with joining the riots, killing a police officer and injuring five others after running them over with a car during a nationwide protest movement in 2022. Many Iranians expressed their opposition to the execution on social media and elsewhere. Narges Mohammadi is one of them. The human rights advocate, who won the Nobel Peace Prize last December, is in a prison in Tehran. She said in a social media post that 61 female political prisoners in her prison will protest on Thursday. She said they will take action for the hundreds of individuals awaiting execution in the prisons of the Islamic Republic and to keep the names of people already executed alive.
