More than 700 runners wearing costumes have competed in a relay marathon combined with a wine party in Fukuoka City, western Japan.
The event was inspired by a marathon in the French city of Bordeaux that allows the participants to drink wine. It was launched in 2017 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Fukuoka and Bordeaux.
The marathon resumed on Sunday after a five-year break due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Runners from 82 teams joined the race, disguising themselves as anime and game characters and animals. They were seen running around the course while taking photos of each other.
One-thousand bottles of Bordeaux wine were served in the afternoon. There was also an information session on wine appreciation.
A woman, who took part in the marathon with four others, said it was good to be able to run while having fun.
A man dressed as a game character ran with 13 of his colleagues. He said it was the third time for him to take part, adding that one of the event's attractions is the opportunity to enjoy wine.
