Taiwanese Vice President Lai Ching-te is expected to become the head of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. President Tsai Ing-wen stepped down as the head of the party after a major setback in local elections held in November. The party candidates lost mayoral posts in three cities, including Taoyuan. They also failed to retake the mayor's office in Taipei. The party is set to vote for a new leader on January 15. Since Lai was the only candidate running, he is expected to become the new party head. The voting will take place even with one candidate, the attention is focused on what percentage of the votes he will be able to garner. After working as the head of the Executive Yuan or Cabinet, Lai assumed the post of vice president in May 2020, when President Tsai entered her second term. He visited Tokyo in July to attend former Prime Minister Abe Shinzo's funeral. In his Facebook post, Lai said he is committed to make his party further trusted by the people and strengthen Taiwan.
