A week has passed since a powerful earthquake occurred off Taiwan's eastern coast on April 3. Rebuilding people's lives is emerging as a challenge. In Hualien County, near the epicenter, the magnitude 7.2 quake registered an intensity of upper 6 on Taiwan's seismic scale of zero to 7. Thirteen people have been confirmed dead. Search operations continue for six people still unaccounted for in the popular tourist destination of Taroko Gorge and elsewhere. The quake also damaged 870 buildings and caused 75 cases of damage to roads and tunnels across Taiwan. Hualien County says more than 1,400 households' homes were damaged. County officials are working with real estate agents and others to secure housing for affected people. They have also set up a counter to receive applications for relief payments and subsidies. Some roads have yet to be repaired in Taroko Gorge, where there were falling rocks and mudslides. Concerns are growing about the quake's impact on tourism, a key industry in the region.
