Snow continues to fall along the Sea of Japan coast due to a strong cold air mass.
        
                    
                  
More snow is expected through Monday between the Hokuriku and Chugoku regions.
        
                    
                  
Heavy snow is also expected in the inland areas of the Kinki and Shikoku regions.
        
                    
                  
Weather officials are calling on people to be on the alert for traffic disruptions, avalanches and snow falling from roofs.
        
                    
                  
The Japan Meteorological Agency says a winter pressure pattern and a strong cold air mass are causing intermittent snow in areas along the Sea of Japan coast between Hokkaido and Chugoku region.
        
                    
                  
The agency says accumulated snow has exceeded that of an average year in many places.
        
                    
                  
As of 11 a.m. on Sunday, snow was 5.08 meters deep in the Sukayu area of Aomori Prefecture; 3.80 meters deep in Uonuma City, Niigata Prefecture; 1.44 meters deep in Aomori City, Aomori Prefecture; 20 centimeters deep in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture; and 19 centimeters deep in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture.
        
                    
                  
In Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, the snow reached 1.6 meters, the deepest since record keeping began.
        
                    
                  
The winter pressure pattern is expected to continue till Monday, causing snow to intensify in areas between the Hokuriku and Chugoku regions from Sunday night to Monday morning.
        
                    
                  
A Japan Sea polar air mass convergence zone, or JPCZ, is expected to appear in areas between Wakasa Bay and the Sanin region, which may cause snow to accumulate rapidly.
        
                    
                  
Heavy snow is also expected in the inland areas of the central Kinki and Shikoku regions, where snowfall is usually light.
        
                    
                  
Snowfall during the 24-hour period through Monday morning could reach 70 centimeters in Niigata Prefecture; 50 centimeters in the Tohoku, Kinki and Hokuriku regions; 30 centimeters in the Tokai and Chugoku regions; 20 centimeters in Hokkaido and the Kanto-Koshin region; and 15 centimeters in the Shikoku region.
        
                    
                  
Snowfall predicted for the 24-hour period through Tuesday morning could reach up to 40 centimeters in Niigata Prefecture and the Kinki region; 30 centimeters in the Hokuriku region; and 15 centimeters in the Shikoku region.
        
                    
                  
Japanese weather officials are calling on people to be on the alert for traffic disruptions, avalanches, snow falling from roofs, power outages and fallen trees caused by snow.
        
                    
                  
People should also watch out for lightning strikes and gusty winds, including tornadoes.
