Trump-Zelenskyy talks end without signing minerals agreement NHK

US President Donald Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy got into a heated argument during talks in Washington, and failed to sign a planned agreement on Ukraine's mineral resources.

The two leaders met at the White House on Friday.

At the outset of the meeting which was open to the media, Trump and Zelenskyy sparred over diplomacy toward Russia and a ceasefire in Ukraine. US Vice President JD Vance also joined the argument.

Trump criticized Zelenskyy, saying, "You're gambling with the lives of millions of people, you're gambling with World War Three."

Zelenskyy said his country will never accept just a ceasefire, adding, "It will not work without security guarantees."

Their joint news conference was cancelled.

The US and Ukraine had hoped to improve relations through Friday's talks but ended up in a deeper confrontation. The development is likely to affect negotiations on a ceasefire.

Zelenskyy reportedly then left the US for Britain. He will likely take part in a meeting of European leaders scheduled for Sunday in London to discuss the defense of Ukraine.
