The White House says President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will host Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and his wife, Kishida Yuko, for an official visit to the United States on April 10.
The White House said on Thursday that the visit, which will include a state dinner, "will underscore the enduring strength of" the bilateral alliance.
It will be the first such visit to the US by a Japanese prime minister since 2015, when then President Barack Obama hosted a summit with Abe Shinzo.
White House National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters that Japan is one of the closest allies of the US in the world and the alliance between the two countries is "very critical" in the Indo-Pacific region.
Kirby said the two leaders are likely to hold "a robust discussion" about how their countries will improve their alliance capabilities across the board and how they will work together across a range of threats and challenges in the Indo Pacific.
Biden had invited Kishida to make an official visit to the US when they met in San Francisco in November.
