Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force has announced that it held a two-day joint exercise with the US and South Korean navies in the East China Sea. The MSDF says eight vessels took part in the exercise held Monday and Tuesday, including the US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz and Japanese and South Korean destroyers. The vessels reportedly practiced anti-submarine tactics and other maneuvers. The MSDF released photos of the three countries' ships navigating in formation around the Nimitz. It was the first trilateral maritime exercise involving a US carrier since September. The MSDF says the purpose of the exercise was to strengthen the deterrence of the Japan-US alliance and to promote security cooperation among Japan, the US and South Korea. Observers say it aimed to showcase the three-way partnership as North Korea repeatedly launches ballistic missiles and China steps up activity in regional waters.
