Former US President Donald Trump has appeared in court as a criminal defendant, the first time for someone who has held the presidency.
                
Trump headed to the courthouse in Manhattan to surrender to authorities. Prosecutors have been investigating hush money paid to an adult film actress during his 2016 run for the White House.
                
He faces dozens of charges. But he says they are politically-motivated. He wrote to his supporters that the Democrats have arrested their &quot;leading opponent.&quot; And he says he has committed &quot;no crime.&quot;
                
A crowd of protesters were waiting for Trump. So were his supporters.
US Representative George Santos said, &quot; I&#039;m not here for the cameras. I&#039;m here to support the president of the United States, who&#039;s being unfairly attacked.
                
The man who led the investigation, District Attorney Alvin Bragg, will discuss the indictment with the media.
                
Trump plans to deliver remarks when he returns to his home in Florida after the arraignment.
