Ukraine claims attack destroyed Russian landing ship in Crimea NHK

Ukraine said on Tuesday that its forces had destroyed a large Russian landing ship in Crimea.

The Ukrainian air force said that it struck the Novocherkassk of Russia's Black Sea Fleet with missiles in the Crimean port of Feodosiia overnight. Moscow annexed Crimea in 2014.

Air force commander Mykola Oleshchuk released a post with a video on social media. Oleshchuk claims the video shows an explosion caused by the Ukrainian attack.

He says Russia's fleet is shrinking, and that the latest result follows the destruction of the Moskva cruiser, the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, in April 2022.

Russia's state-run news agency quoted the defense ministry as saying a Ukrainian attack damaged the landing ship. Sergei Aksyonov, the Russian-appointed head of Crimea, reported on social media that the attack caused a fire, killing one and injuring two others.

Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin on Monday that his forces have taken control of Maryinka in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk. Maryinka is located southwest of the region's capital and a stronghold for Ukrainian forces.

Putin said the result gives the military access to a broader operational space.

A spokesperson for the Ukrainian military denied the Russian claim of capturing Maryinka.
